October 21st through 23rd 2010 the gospel academy Krefeld is presenting the
"Contemporary Black Gospel Music" - prayer sung with both body and soul
"Contemporary Black Gospel Music" is the musical language of the Gospel which originated in African-American church
communities in the North of the United States and is still cultivated there today.
The inspiring rhythms fascinate choirs and congregations -- the Good News is not just a word, it becomes an experience, the anticipation that:
"There must be a God somewhere".
Compared with classical sacred music perfected in Central Europe, contemporary black Gospel music isn’t necessarily “pretty”. It is a deeply honest expression of faith and emotion stemming from the entire personality of every person, supported and embraced within a tangible community of like-minded people.
The lyrics are sung from memory and translated into movement, gesture and facial expression. All of this is performed rhythmically and coordinated by the “oversight” of the choir director. The words are rather shouted out than purely sung, because their essence is the expression of the Good News with all the options that voice and body have to offer.
The main goal of our Festival is for 3 days to provide the opportunity to gain not just a theoretical insight into this “form of singing” but to be able to experience it with body and soul. That means, besides the energetic “shouting” – in the appropriate vocal pitch – to move with the rhythm in coordination with the other singers while clapping on the count of 2 and 4.
Within the last few years, Gospel and Spirituals have become a part of a natural repertoire in many choirs – sacred or secular. What defines contemporary Black Gospel music is its energy, found both in the voice and the movement of the whole body, as well as in the spiritual expression of its content.

Michael Denard Green
Michael Denard Green was born April 9th 1977 in Quincy, Florida. After graduating from High school, he attended the Florida State University, and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary English Education in 1998. He moved to Tampa, Florida to begin his teaching career. He showed great dedication for educating minority students and received a lot of recognition. He was employed by the School District of Hillsborough County for eleven years before his transition in 2009 to Houston, Texas.
The call of God upon Michael was evident at an early age. According to his mother, he was singing even before he was able to talk. His father gave him various instruments to play, and although he had very little formal training in music, he developed a love and an ear for music, which he attributes to God’s Anointing upon his life.
In addition to working with his local church music department, he sang with and directed, district and jurisdictional choirs, and he started his own group, Inspired Voices of Praise. Minister Mike also sang with the Florida State University Gospel Choir, and formed Webb Middle School’s first gospel choir in Tampa, Florida. He serves as one of the national Creative Arts Directors for the Men of Promise of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. The Men of Promise and Women of Worship of the GMWA have featured his music during its national conventions.
Angelika
Rehaag
from Krefeld has been a director of Gospel choirs in Krefeld, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Meerbusch and Cologne since 1993. She founded the 'Krefelder Gospel Musik Festival', in 1997, as well as the 'gospel academy krefeld'in 1999. As a workshop and seminar director for contemporary Black Gospel music she travels all over Germany and abroad.
"Looking back I can say that to me everything started with the desire to make known this well loved and longed for choir music: ‘a once crazy idea’ – from which somewhere down the road came to life 6 Gospel choirs and a Gospel music festival whose initiator wasn’t me!
From the beginning until today I received an unending support for this work – especially during the 10 years of festival – by numerous different people, who in some way share this idea or even this dream with me. Before and during the festival there were up until 80 (!) voluntary honorary helpers working each year, who would even take a vacation to be a part of it. All of this has brought us to where we are at now, according to our personal time which we put into this and our skills which were available for us to use.
For everything that came to life within the last couple of years around this music, I thank God from the bottom of my heart, because the whole thing certainly wasn’t my intention. Our festival is a natural consequence of our long lasting work with American Gospel artists and also the yearly choir tours to the United States. That’s where we mainly sang in African-American churches and were able to experience the historical origin and the spiritual well of contemporary Black Gospel music. Now I am more than happy, that with this festival 2010 I can take a new chance to continue with this work and am extraordinarily thankful for it."
